Tallinn

Self-organised trips

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and is an historical city being traced back as far as 1154. The most noticeable part of the city is the central hill called Toompea which is covered with winding cobbled streets lined with medieval houses. Remains of the fortified city wall that surrounded the hill still remain including beautifully preserved guard towers.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN TALLINN

  • The Old Town built between the 15th-17th centuries is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is a great place to start your discovery of Tallinn by foot, right the way down to the city wall and surrounding green parks. There are free tours available by local students and these are great for their personal historical and cultural stories of Tallinn throughout the ages.
  • Toompea Hill is a great place for views over the old city and surrounding parks and the Raekoja Plats square at the top offers cafes and restaurants to relax and people-watch. The most popular part of Tallinn for tourists is the All-Linn area, and this is where you’ll find Viru, Tallinn’s trendiest street for shopping.
  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a beautiful 19th century Russian Orthodox Church and a very popular tourist attraction while St Mary's Cathedral (Toomkirik) is the oldest church in the city dating back to 1229 and originally built as a Catholic church. Just outside the city can be found the huge Tallinn Zoo containing the world’s best collection of mountain sheep and goat, while for those who would like to experience the history and culture of Tallinn and its people then the Open Air Museum is within walking distance from there.
