The maritime metropolis with much “Scene”
Metropolis, a feisty scene and maritime atmosphere - all those denotes the second biggest city of Germany, Hamburg. The city located at the river Elbe offers something for everybody, especially young people get their money’s worth.
The best basis to explore Hamburg is the
Youth Hostel “Auf dem Stintfang” which is located next to the jetties. The view from the panorama lobby at the harbour is splashy. Historical sailing ships anchor here and container ships from all over the world arrive. You can also see the big cruise liners up close. What about a harbour tour with captain Prüsse? Next to it you find the iconic quarter of St. Pauli and even the centre with the Michaelis Church (“Michel”) and the fancy stores around Mönckebergstraße aren’t far away.
Whoever visits Hamburg, a must see is the Reeperbahn with its erotically nightclubs. This quarter of Hamburg is colourful, loud and jarring. On the side roads you find hip clubs and bars: “Hamburger Berg”, “Barbarabar”, “Nachtlager” and “Rosis Bar” are the favourites of young people. Here are live-clubs where already the Beatles have performed. And especially the quarter “Schanze” (Schanzenviertel) is well known for its bars, clubs and restaurants. Another exciting experience is the fish market, even if you have to get up pretty early. Interesting are also the historical warehouse district with the brick storehouses, the “miniature wonderland” and the “Hamburg Dungeon” a chamber of horrors.
The second
Youth Hostel in Hamburg called “Horner Rennbahn” was just streamlined. From the patio you have a great view over the city and it’s only five tram stations away from the centre. You can easily reach all sights by public transportation. Both Youth Hostels offer a ticket service for their guests for harbour round trips, the miniature wonderland, the Hamburg Dungeon, the chocolate museum, the public transportation and city tours.
The “Hamburger Dom” is the biggest public festival in the north of Germany. Three times a year you can experience fun, nostalgia and thrills. The “Hamburger Dom” offers colourful booths, nostalgic carousels and high-tech rides. Both Hamburg’s citizens and its visitors can have a wonderful time walking the three kilometer long Dom with its many exciting sights.
Romantics will love the old horse carousels. Those who love illusions will be enchanted by good old show booths. Fans of speed can find excitement and thrills in modern high-tech rides. In addition to all these attractions you will also find delicious foods of all varieties, from small snacks to classy menus.
Hamburg has long been famous for its food markets - the fish markets have been exported around the world - but the second-largest city in Germany also does a good line in Christmas Markets. Towards the end of November until the end of December, the city attracts visitors from all over the world with its festive Christmas markets. Don’t miss the mulled wine and colourful Christmas decorations. Hamburg's main Christmas Market is held in front of the Town Hall with a large Christmas tree marking the location.
But there are a variety of other 'styles' of market dotted around the city, with for example the 'Santa Pauli' festival, the red-light St Pauli district of Hamburg around the Reeperbahn. It is offering the mindblowing concept of the world's first erotic Christmas market. It markets itself as the 'horniest Christmas market' in the city.
