Hostelling International Slovenia and Janunu Hannover e.V. participated in the selection for the 2024 Global Youth Travel Awards with the educational project "Travel Different for Future", that is aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and a sustainable way of life. The project competed in the category for the Best Responsible Tourism Initiative and received confirmation that it is one of the best, despite strong competition from around the world. The "Travel Different for Future" project is therefore one of the five projects that made it to the final selection, and at the same time the only "finalist" from the European Union.
The aim of the project is to encourage young people to travel more responsibly through workshops on sustainable tourism. More than 50 have been held in Slovenia alone to date, with a total of more than 1200 young people participating. The importance of the project has been confirmed by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) and the European Union, both of which are key co-funders of the project. In 2024, the youth hostel associations from Spain and Portugal also joined the project. Together, we are already planning further development of project activities and seeking new funding sources to ensure the project's sustainability.
What makes the project special is the peer-to-peer or equal approach, where young people are encouraged to share their knowledge with their younger peers in a collaborative way. This approach, where young people aged 18 to 30 educate those between 13 and 18, is almost unheard of in Slovenia and brings much-needed innovation to the field of education.
Being shortlisted for the final selection of a project that is only two and a half years old is a significant honour and recognition. The final results will be announced on September 27 at the World Youth and Student Travel Conference (WYSTC), the largest global even in the field of youth tourism.
We want to take advantage of this exceptional success by inviting schools, associations, and other organizations interested in promoting sustainable thinking and travel to join the "Travel Different for Future" project. Together, we can work to make travel as sustainable as possible.
