Dolomites are a part of the Alps and are a true heaven for all mountain lovers – no matter what the season. From rock climbing, hiking, to naturally skiing and many other activities in between, they offer something for everybody. Dolomites are in the northern part of Italy and are a tourist destination, with a typical and attractive winter skiing offers, but also in other seasons. There’s always excitement in the air. For those, who do not desire a hard challenge, there are many relaxed walking trails, but they also offer tours that last for days and will be for the more demanding hikers. Cyclists can also test their endurance and the tempo seen in Giro d`Italia.

The mountains that are left over by the sea

The Dolomites have a long history, connected to corals, limestone algae, shellfish… as the area used to be under the sea. All of these animals did their biological functions and have died in this area, which was the foundation of the entire mountain range. It was the Swiss architect, Le Corbusier, who nicknamed the Dolomites as the most impressive building in the world. It took 230 million years and titanic forces to form this natural phenomenon at the bottom of the sea. As the lithospheric place of Africa started pushing north some 30 million years ago, the ocean moved and the ground was pushed to be dry land. Under the rays of the sun, which burned the stone and the frost and ice formed the cracks and crevices in it.

The iron roads and narrow step-ways

The Dolomites have many well-known iron roads – la feratas – which are secured paths where you need to climb the rocks via manmade iron support. There are many guides, who will take you along these well-kept paths and even really free climbs. People say that the best and most beautiful la feratas can be found in the Brenta area, with typical sharp mountains. The area between Lago di Garda and the ranges of Adamello and Presanella is considered to be the most beautiful mountain area with narrow step-ways. As there are many stone tables in the area, there are also many iron roads leading up to them. The Brenta area, in general, is considered the most beautiful part of the Dolomites. As with other areas there are sharp peaks, steep and solid rocks and many towering structures that will make your head spin. But there are many stone tables here as well. It’s them that set the Brenta area apart from the rest of Dolomites and attract so many visitors. They even appear to be manmade, as they are of right and smooth shapes.

It is said this is the father of all ferates and I totally agree. All of them belong to a national park, where bears use to live. There are also some plant forms native to this area.

Winter paradise

Both alpine and tour skiing, cross country, mountaineering, ice climbing, and much more – these are the sporting activities Dolomites are providing for the winter. Among most famous resorts we’d just name the Cortina d'Ampezzo and Alta Badia, which attract tourists from all over the globe. The tourist offer and the variety of boarding capability is so varied, especially in the better known places. You will also find many bars, restaurants, tour operators, and rental shops for all kind of sporting equipment. The ski slopes offer miles of slopes and for the adrenalin lovers there are also peaks you can climb to and then descend by skis in perfect free style.

The only downside, why some people really decide not to visit Dolomites in the winter, are the prices. The skiing passes are really expensive. But in return you get a great infrastructure and safety, which do cost.

Tourism

The tourist sector is very well developed in the Dolomites and along main roads you will always find a place to sleep over, to eat and much more to attract a visitor. The lovers of fine food will not be disappointed. You can also sleep in various set ups, from camping sites, motels, hotels, hostels, boarding houses and much more. You can find many offers online, but it’s not a problem to just search for a place once you get there. Most visitors prefer the authentic Alpine places to sleep over, which are usually smaller wooden objects that fit the Alpine background perfectly. In the heart of such natural area is also the Hostel Alla Rocca, in a place called Varena. It offers a great location and good prices. As said earlier, you can visit any time of the year, as each season has something to offer.

No matter how many times you’ve visited Dolomites, they will always surprise you. Tall mountains with green and dark forests, snow covered peaks and white winter forests… they all make Dolomites look like fountains rising towards the sky and give them their unique look.
