Romantic ride on the river Danube

Travelling by or on the river Danube is because of its history an extremely interesting adventure.

River Danube is the second longest river in Europe, right after Volga River. Its path runs from Schwarzwald in Germany to the Black Sea. It is more than just water for the country it runs through. It is a cultural area and a water path. A mental and economic connection between middle and eastern Europe and an attractive region in all its ten countries. Many towns grew beside it. Interesting objects that are also tourist traps. Passau and Linz are two of the cities where you can take a tourist boat on river Danube. Cycling on paths by the river is also becoming more and more popular.

Pretty blue Danube

Danube was always connected with many European nations and because of that, it was also an inspiration to many artists. Through years, people built important places, castles, monasteries, churches by the river Danube, which are another proof of its rich history. History was even more interesting near Linz where also lies a tripoint of Germany, Austria and Czech Republic. Mighty Bruchner symphonies can be heard in the churches. Many songs are singing about the river Danube. Some people thought the river is the only way for kings and emperors to travel and their travels can be seen in monasteries, castles and medieval towns. Every miracle by the river can be seen from the river or from the roads that run by the river.

Passau

The city lies in south of Germany where you can see three rivers float into one. The locals named it Dreiflüssestadt or the city of three rivers. These rivers are Ilz, Danube and Inn. Interesting thing about these rivers is that Ilz is the biggest one but when they float into one river, the river is called Danube. Passau is known after a big number of students, about 10,000 students visit the local university. Adolf Hitler lived in Passau from 1892 to 1894. Near Passau there were three concentration camps in WWII – Passau I (Oberilzmühle), Passau II (Waldwerke Passau-Ilzstadt) and Passau III (Jandelsbrunn). Today the city is a tourist city, which is also due to its rich history. The crossroads of three rivers, old city centre and the famous cathedral are especially attractive to the tourists.

Linz

The city is the capital of Austrian state Upper Austria. The city has been connected to Danube since it was built by Romans. Linz is also connected with Hitler. In Leonding near Linz lie Hitler’s parents. Today Linz is a lively city full of culture where arts and music run the city. There are many festivals and other events in the city. The city park is also a popular place to get together in summer. Linz was the European capital of culture in 2009. Modern art gallery represents the modern art from 20th and 21st century and is located on Danube’s riverbank as well as other museums and cultural and historical events. Event “Klangwolke” and festival “Ars Electronica” also happen on these riverbanks.

From Passau to Linz by a panoramic boat

The journey by boat from Passau to Linz is well known but cycling this journey is also becoming more and more popular. Passau is a great starting point to cycle by the river Danube. The path is great and there are many inns where you can sleep. But more tourists still rather take the panoramic boat where they also serve delicious food to see this beautiful landscape. Sailing on the enormous river is relaxing for everyone and lasts about five hours. And on the way, you can see many castles, courts and churches. To liven up the journey there are many power plants where the boats are slowly lowered with water.

When you see so many beautiful things on the journey from Passau to Linz, you really think about the history and beauty of this part of Europe.
