The Büsum Youth Hostel in Northern Germany

The Wadden Sea is a very special habitat. Due to the ebb and flow of the tides, a wide variety of plants and animals has developed in the North Sea. Visitors will experience this unimpaired coastal environment with all their senses.

The town of Büsum, situated just 100 kilometres north of Hamburg, is the ideal starting point for nature lovers and recreation seekers. Walking barefoot through the mud is a unique experience. You can taste the salt in the air and feel the mud between your toes. Countless microorganisms, mussels, and fish flourish in this ecosystem between the sea and the land. Hundreds of thousands of seabirds have their territory here and up to 12 million migratory birds take a rest here during their long journey. And with a little luck, visitors can, during their ramble, observe seals and even find amber.

Where animals find peace on the Wadden Sea, people can also escape the stress of everyday life and gather new strength. The healing effect of the sea air and the mudflats attract many guests to Büsum. For 200 years the town has been officially recognised as a Nordseeheilbad (North Sea health spa). The Wadden Sea has also been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The most distinctive landmark is the lighthouse with its typical red and white colour scheme. Although these days it works automatically, it still, as ever, guides the ships to the harbour. From here, tourists can go on fishing trips or visit the Wadden Sea National Park. The most well-known speciality is North Sea shrimps which are at their best when eaten very fresh in a bread roll at the harbour.

Büsum is ideal for families. There are green dykes and the shallow waters of the North Sea, ideal for splashing around in! Water lovers both young and old can let off steam in the large swimming pool complex “Piratenmeer”. There is a pedestrian area with many shops and the hostel is just a few steps from the harbour.

The Büsum hostel was extensively renovated and converted to celebrate its 40th anniversary; it now boasts with a covered barbecue area for up to 80 people, the characteristic tower is now illuminated at night and its fifth floor room has been restored.

The youth hostel has once again been awarded for its first-class quality. There are different areas for groups and families so that the different needs of guests, either peace and quiet or activity, have been taken into account. All family rooms have a shower and a toilet. Free Wi-Fi is available in all public areas. Facilities include six joint common and dining rooms, a cosy club room, a washing machine and dryer, as well as numerous sports facilities.
