Installations of science, art, literature, history, technology and animation can make the journey interesting and varied.
The founding of the city of Frankfurt is defined by the year 794 in the records of the Frankish king Charlemagne. The name is derived from the name of a Germanic tribe of the Franks who travelled across the settlement, as a result of which the settlement acquired the name Franconofurt. The first settlements were established as early as 3000 BC, and later, at the beginning of the 1st century AD, the Romans established the first military camp. From 843 until 1138, the imperial castle of the Palatinate served as an important royal residence of the East Frankish Kingdom. With the 13th century, Frankfurt became a free imperial city, and in the 14th century Bulla Aurea proclaimed it an established chosen city of Roman kings. In 1810 Napoleon established the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, which operated for five years. After his reign, Frankfurt was once again a free city. The period of World War II marks the destruction of Altstadt when in 1944 the Royal Air Force bombed most of the medieval architecture of Frankfurt culture.
The Bolongaro Garden was founded by the Bolongaro family in 1775 in the district of Höchst. The garden was created together with the Bolongaro family palace, part of which was built behind the palace with two pavilions. The Baroque palace was finally built together with a garden in 1783. The landscaping of the garden is designed with two terraces, which are symmetrically shaped overlooking the river. The terraces are decorated with pavilions set in the east and west, a fountain with a sculpture in the image of Neptune and sandstone figures.
The Botanical Garden is spread over 8 hectares of land, where the Botanic Garden and Goethe University are located. The garden can be visited free of charge, every day from 1 March to 31 October. Visitors can see over 5,000 different species of outdoor plants from the Central European, Mediterranean, North American and Asian areas. The establishment of the garden dates back to 1763 with the Senckenberg Botanical Foundation, which originally designed the garden next to the city gate of the medieval Eschenheimer Tower.
The Chinese Garden is modelled after the Shiukou Gardens in Huizhou, where 22 viewpoints, a marble bridge, a spring pond, and a variety of pavilions are reconstructed. The concept of the garden is inspired by the ancient Chinese doctrine of Taoism and seven elements such as sky, earth, water, stone, animals, plants and buildings that restore balance and life harmony. The Frankfurt Chinese Garden was built by artisans and craftsmen from China. Special Chinese materials were used for the construction.
The Frankfurt Zoo includes 500 animal species and more than 4,500 animals. It was created in 1858 and is considered one of the oldest zoos in the world. The outstanding credit for the development and world recognition of the zoo goes to former director, professor Bernhard Grzimek, who rebuilt the zoo after its destruction in World War II. A special feature of the zoo is the Grzimek building, which presents nocturnal animals and their daily life ritual in a simulated nocturnal environment.
The Palm Gardens cover 20 hectares of land, where approximately 13,000 plant species are grown, both external and internal, which are on display in the open air and in the houses of the Palm Gardens. In 2021, when the Palm Gardens marked the 150th anniversary of the creation of the gardens, the Flower and Butterfly exhibition opens to visitors, where we can see the life cycle of the butterfly. Every year since 1931, the Rose and Light Festival has been held in the Palm Gardens in June, celebrating the blooming season of the red rose.
Over the year, locals organise over 100 markets, street festivals, traditional fairs and other outdoor events that celebrate a specific purpose. At the end of the year, many guests are attracted by the Frankfurt Christmas Market, which opens in Römerberg Square and St Paul's Square in the heart Altstadt. The largest and oldest Dippemess festival, suitable for old and young, begins on the last day of March. The festival with a long tradition was first organised in the 14th century. Wäldchestag, or forest day, happens in May to bring the people of Frankfurt together and connect them with the city. One of Frankfurt's most important festivals, the Opera Square Festival, started in 1978. The event was initially called Lucae-Brunnenfest, for the purpose of the newly installed Lucae Fountain. In August, Frankfurt celebrates the festival of apple wine, a popular alcoholic beverage also known as Ebbelwoi. At the Art, Culture and Music Festival — Museum Embankment Festival, museums, stage performances and productions are presented. Dippemess takes place again in September at the Ratsweg fairgrounds, near the local ice rink.
The rich history and luxurious cultural heritage near Frankfurt invites travellers to the past times and to see the lifestyle of the ancestors of the Frankfurt people who lived the castle life. The excursion tour through the Rhine valley, where 1000 years of history is combined and where the most castles are built in Germany, shows the diverse medieval architecture. A tour of the Rhine Valley introduces, among other things, the Niederwald monument in Rüdesheim on the Rhine, which was created on the occasion of the founding of the German Empire in 1871, after the end of the Franco-Prussian War.
Eltz Castle is a 12th-century medieval castle built on Moselle Hill in Germany. The medieval castle was built by the noble House of Eltz family on a 70-metre-high rock by the Elzbach River and a 300-acre Eltz Forest. The architecture of the medieval castle was built to protect the trade routes in the Moselle Hills, Maifeld Province, and Eifel Mountains. The construction of a castle with eight, 35 meters high towers, wooden frames, turrets and roofs is a unique example of medieval architecture that has never been damaged or destroyed. The entire castle building consists of three houses by the door, three courtyards, a dungeon, eight central houses, a chapel and three houses at the main entrance.
Hohenzollern Castle is a large 19th-century palace built on the territory of the noble House of Hohenzollern family, which previously housed two castles in the 11th and 15th centuries. The palace was built by the Prussian King Frederick William IV to the influential Prussian architect and builder Friedrich August Stüler. The large palace, built on the 855-metre-high Swabian Jura Mountains, is an outstanding example of neo-Gothic architectural style. The collection in the palace includes paintings by Gerard van Honthorst, Antoine Pesne, Anton von Werner, Franz von Lenbach, Philip de László, as well as a variety of useful objects made of gold and silver from the 17th to the 19th century.
