18 and alone in Spain

Menorca is one of the Balearic islands, next to Ibiza and Mallorca. It’s a perfect destination for taking a break and for a family vacation. Calm atmosphere, crystal clear water, shiny sand and beautiful nature invite tourists from all over the world.

Volunteer Exchange

In August 2017 I got a chance to go on a volunteer exchange to Spain, more exact through the programme HI Connect. I got to work in a hostel and in exchange, they offered me food and accommodation. My expenses were only the plane ticket, pocket money and insurance. I got my ticket with no problems and the public transport connections are great on the whole island.

I spent the month in Sa Vinyeta hostel where I helped in the kitchen in the morning, and in the afternoon, I explored, sunbathed and met a lot of nice people. I don’t speak Spanish, but I had no problems communicating, although the communication was sometimes with hands and feet.

I would recommend renting a car or a bike, as the buses only drive to the most tourist spots. The island is made for explorers, but it’s a little harder without your own transportation. After I finished work, I took my bike and went on a trip, usually on one of the beach.

Alone in Spain

Before I went on a trip, I had a lot of doubts. I was scared of flying, I was scared that I am going to miss my family, that the work will be too hard for me, and so much more. When I got there, my fears disappeared. The employees on the airport helped me if I needed anything, and I was so busy that time just flew by. My job was to help in the kitchen, to make the beds, to sweep floors, which wasn’t that hard. It also helped that the employees in the hostel were kind and funny.

My month in Spain taught me so much. For example, it’s smart if you get along with cooks in the kitchen and that you can’t find the most beautiful spots with tourist guide, but with exploring. I met so many interesting people from all around the world and made so many special memories with them.

Sa Vinyta Hostel

The hostel is beautiful, budget friendly and the staff is great. I should point out their cooks, Ivan and David. The hostel is located near Ciutadella port, which is where everything happens. We can sit in one of the many beautiful restaurants and have a great meal, and a cold sangria. The port comes alive at night when the young have fun while listening to music and enjoying good company.

Cami de Cavalls

Cami de Cavalls is a path which leads around the island, perfect for walking, cycling and running. It was built along the coast to connect the island and make transportation easier and keep it safe from pirates at the same time. Barbarossa himself wanted to conquer this island in 16th century. The path takes you to see beautiful cliffs, sandy beaches and breath taking panoramic views.

Festes de Sant Joan

In the summer, there are many festivals happening on the island. Horses are decorated with colourful ornaments, as well as the main streets, which are also covered with sand. When the band starts playing their folk music, come the so called “caixers” riding horses. Horses lift themselves on their back feet and the audience touches their horseshoes. After that, they throw a big party with live music and their typical drinks - gin and lemonade.

I would definitely recommend a HI connect exchange especially to those who love to travel. I must admit that I’m more confident and more sufficient person now. I will always cherish the friends I made there and the memories of my adventures in Spain.
